Reflections of a middle age lady searching for the truth, or some thing that resembles it.
Obsessions; short term fixation versus long term goals
One reoccurring life lesson is managing short term fixation. There is a balancing act between trying something new, committing to a project, mastering a new skill versus a fixation and obsession with the item or project.
At times this has served me well, theater productions, garage sales, travel plans etc. Other instances it has crossed over into wasteful and dangerous behavior, online surfing, games, TV watching, extracurriculars. Once the activity transitions from a few minutes of fun and relaxation to staying up too late or ignore everything else, chores, people, pets etc then it is no longer a positive experience. It becomes a negative influence and something to be very mindful of, avoiding it if possible.
~ Case in point, the new games I downloaded this month, solitaire, 4word game, hidden word. I’m stuck on level 9 & 10 in 4 word. Do I give it up and move on? Or do I spend hours trying to solve it and get struck farther into the game? Worse yet, do I spend money to move forward?
Routines, starting and stopping.
It’s September, the time of year when families with children start back to school, returning to a more schedule routine. Piano lessons, soccer practice, Girl Scouts, Sunday School etc…
It has been ten years since our daughter left for college, so that pattern doesn’t really exist anymore. The one big change is going back to a five day work week after a summer of Fridays off. This is very hard to adjust to each year. I like my three days off!! I feel more relaxed and enjoy the weekend more with the extra day.
My challenge continues to be to develop a routine that give some structure to the week adding exercise, socializing, shopping, and downtime. The last two weeks my evenings have been unproductive, watching TV shows or playing games on the tablet. After a summer of studying French and organizing the house for selling, I’m not sure what to do now in the evenings?
The days are getting shorter, but I still have a hour most nights to try to accomplish something. The question is what?
